Shivonne Cammell is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker, with expertise in Child and Family practice and Child Centered Play Therapy. She began her career as an Applied Behavioural Analysis Therapist working with children with Autism, and progressed to working with children and families in Foster Care, Child Protection, Specialist Family Support Services and Trauma Counselling Services. In recent years, she has specialised in providing therapeutic services for children who have experienced complex trauma and disrupted attachment, working for not-for-profit organisations and in private practice.
Shivonne practices Child Centered Play Therapy as she feels it is a respectful and sensitive model that is developmentally appropriate for children. Children’s language is play, not words, and the relationship that forms between a child and therapist in the therapy room allows children to “play out” their feelings and problems, to make sense of their world and to build resilience.
Shivonne also works closely with parents/caregivers who are an integral part of the therapeutic process. Shivonne keeps parents informed and involved at each stage of therapy, and provides parents with support to understand their child’s feelings and motivations and how this might be expressed through behaviour.
